VHS to digital. Fast forward and slowed down. A synthesis of the digital and the analog glitch. Joyride is part two of an ongoing Elvis video-cycle.

The remix of an existing work contradicts the idea that the meaning of this work is fixed forever and can only exist in one context. Instead, remix films circulate alternative narratives of popular works, all the while being suspicious of conventions and authorities.

Dina Yanni is a video artist and researcher whose work is influenced by popular culture, digital image manipulation and critical theory. She creates video work that utilizes existing footage, experimental editing and data corruption to reveal, reevaluate and reframe power structures discovered in the original materials. Yanni also publishes theory-based work around the study of power structures behind visual representations and possibilities for counter-narratives. She holds a PhD in Political Science and a Master in Film Production. Her work has been exhibited at experimental film and video art festivals internationally.

This is a story about the time I almost became a flamingo.

i spent eight days watching them
or maybe we were watching each other
on the sixth night I started to dream in flamingo
after several nights of this I realized I had to leave.
hearing their personal disagreements & family dramas
felt private & weird that I was suddenly listening
it also caused me distress for some reason
that i was becoming flamingo or something
& the repercussions of this were rather unclear.
despite theorizing boundary transgression ad nauseum
i still wasn't sure if i wanted to be a flamingo
but i'm still quite certain at what transpired there.
& even now I'm anxious it will happen again

Nicole Rayburn’s artistic practice is a convergence of video, text and still imagery. With rose-coloured glasses, she examine’s the intersections of popular culture, capitalism, mental health and nature—the sources of all things wondrous and cruel. 

Rayburn has screened at video festivals nationally and internationally, including Athens Digital Art Festival (Greece), European Media Arts Festival (Germany), Lausanne Underground Film Festival (Switzerland), The Fine Art Film Festival (USA), Antimatter [media art] (Canada) and Festival de Cine Experimental de Bogotá (Colombia). She has exhibited at galleries such as Ohio State University Mansfield Gallery (USA), Latitude 53 (Canada), Stride Gallery (Canada), Harcourt House (Canada) and Artspace (Canada), with upcoming solo exhibitions at Brotherly Love Gallery (USA) and Penny Contemporary (Australia). She holds an MFA from the University of Western Ontario and am currently an Assistant Professor at SOVA.

Zhuoyun Chen | 2022 | USA | 4 min

The film weaves together a collection of images portraying enigmatic landscapes that draw upon the ethereal presence of ghosts, a mysterious and haunting face and the allure of minerals. I wish to construct an image of emotional riddles and the act of deciphering. 

Zhuoyun (Yun) Chen works with mediums such as 16mm analog film, digital video, computer generated imagery, ceramics and metal. Her films often examine the sociopolitical dimensions of past occurrences disregarded by younger generations in modern China, providing an intimate look at their emotional and psychological impact on individuals across generations. Yun’s recent projects experiment with figures, landscapes and artificial objects as a means to challenge societal norms surrounding female sexuality, offering alternative narratives within intimate relationships. Originally a resident of China, Yun now lives and works in Los Angeles.

A psychologist undergoes an experiment with the analog technology of his time and undertakes a visual journey into his own brain. Welcome to the vistas within.

Born and based in India, Lakshya Upadhyah makes experimental movies that use filmic language to explore beauty and abstract ideas. His creative journey began with short films exploring big ideas including meditation, mind and language, the human species. evolution, society and mental illness. In a new phase of growth, the artist is venturing into long format works inclined towards abstraction and documentary. Upadhyah wishes to create films that express a holistic spirit of support for nature and humanity.
